Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

West Side Story is a popular musical first debuted in September 1957 and that was made into an Academy Award winning film of the same name in 1961; the musical was written by Arthur Laurents (book), a well known American playwright and novelist. The music was composed by Leonard Bernstein while the lyrics were written by Stephen Sondheim.

The plot is somewhat parallel to that of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet; the innovative music and the unique theme which addressed contemporary social problems in American society led to the musical achieving immense popularity. The story features Tony a reluctant member of a street gang known as the Jets who falls in love with Maria who is the sister of the leader of a rival gang, the Sharks.

The film West Side Story directed by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise and written by Robbins and Laurents along with Ernest Lehman won eleven Academy Awards and was placed number 41 on the American Film Institute's list of greatest American movies.
