There are different methods available to help falling asleep, if a subject suffers from conditions such as insomnia. Many involve simple routines, such as only going into the bedroom when sleepy, taking activities such as reading, watching television and eating to other parts of a house. Setting a regular bed and waking up time will also allow the body clock to adjust, as well as avoiding naps during the day. Medical treatments can also be used to help sleep, including sedatives, tranquilizers and anti-anxiety treating drugs. Avoiding stimulants in diet such as coffee, chocolate and cigarettes, will also slow the body down and encourage sleep. Exercise can also help the body to relax and prepare it for sleep. Other more alternative treatments include meditation to relax the mind, while taking vitamin B or high protein snacks through the day can relax the body and make sleep easier to pass into.

I have insomnia, i can fall asleep easily enough, but i will wake at like 2 am and just be up for at least a couple hours, if not for the rest of the night. What i have found works is to listen to stuff i have recorded - audio of favorite tv shows, a hypnosis tape for childbirth (haha, it is so dull, but it worked, both for sleep and for childbirth) and Books on tape. I find it most helpful if they are books i have read, and reruns of shows, so i am just casually listening to something i already know the dialog of.
Listening to my stuff instantly stops me from thinking about all the stressful stuff that is always bouncing around my head. I am simply unable to not think about those things without them. Been trying for years, finally have gotten good nights sleep, so please do try it! Good luck.
