TEFL is very popular with young graduates, mainly because you can get a basic training in a month, jobs are easy to find in the summer (when many new graduates are looking for temporary work) and as a way of seeing the world it's perfect; better paid than bar work, often fun and looks good on your CV. As a long –term career, the same applies; most people stay in TEFL because they do find it enjoyable and rewarding. Generally the students are fairly motivated, and you avoid most (though by no means all) of the behavioural problems which are so common in state schools. It's also a flexible profession, easy to leave and return to.
The main disadvantage is the low pay. There is also a general lack of security in the profession; short-term contracts and redundancies are common. The other main drawback for some is the lack of progression opportunities; there are senior and management positions, of course, but no steady promotional ladder.
