Since I Have Had Success With My Writing Career, My Friend Has Been Cold Towards Me. Why?

Answer Question

It is obvious that your friend is being this way because of your success. We do tend to get a little jealous of those who are better off than us, particularly if we haven't had any success ourselves. Perhaps you should talk to your friend. It could just be a coincidence that she is being this way, though if it started up when you gained success then it seems as though it is because of this.

Try helping your friend to achieve something. Ask her what aims she has for her career and give her a little help working towards them. If she wishes to write, then give her some tips to get her started. Once she has achieved something herself, she won't feel so down about your success. Perhaps if you get published, you could dedicate a book to her, thanking her for any help she's given you. That should certainly make her happy!

Your friend might be jealous of you. I have a sister who is the same way. When I call her up to tell her that I have just sold another story, she changes the subject, or tells me, "I am an author, too. I wrote a thank you note to the room mother this morning, and she showed everyone."

My sister can do so many thing that I can not do for one reason or another. She sews, knits, tatts, and crochets beautifully. But she is still so competitive with everything I do.

Perhaps if you write something about your friend that is flattering, she will get close again. Or perhaps if you compliment her on something she is special at doing. I know how had this is for you. And I feel that it is also sad as it puts a cloud over the happiness I feel when I get published.

Whatever you do, don't let your friend's coolness stop you from writing! She will get over it, or if she gets too standoffish, then she was not a true best friend. Good luck with your writing!
