Those aren't heart worms. My vet has a model of a dog's heart full of long narrow white heart worms. What you are seeing are other worms. You could compart them to the descriptions on the worm medicine at a pet store. The best thing is to take the dog and a sample to the vet and let the vet give it a safe, effective remedy just for that type of worms.

Heart worms look like earth worms, only they are white and very very long. They intertwine around the heart and kill it. Dogs usually get heart worm through mosquito bites and/or fleas and ticks. These "white-looking rice pieces" you talk about might be another type of worm or maybe something he ate that could not digest well. Talk to a vet about it!
