Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin was the first President of the Russian Federation after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Described as a "historical figure" by the White House after his death on April the 23rd 2007 was born in the village of Butka, in the Talitsky District of Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russia on February the 1st 1931.
He ruled the Russian Federation for almost a decade between 1991 to 1999. He is credited for bringing Democracy to the Soviet arena. However his overall performance is some times viewed with mixed views as his era brought a lot of dramatic and rapid change in the Russian history and according to some historians "changed Russia beyond recognition".
The period of rule included changes in politics, economics and social life. At most times going down the barrel. The politics of the countries seemed more than democratic as he mostly ruled with utmost power, changing prime ministers, choosing new ones or some times acting as his own Prime minister!. His rule of power is also charged with country wide corruption , which eventually resulted in a drastic decline in the income of average Russians and a decline in life expectancy.
Despite these facts he remained a popular figure around the world, described a man who was more than just life. His antics after getting drunk on high official visits are of no secrets to anyone. Bringing Humor to many a millions.
He surprisingly transfered his power to his chosen Viladimir Putin hours before the new millennium in a thought that Russia enter the new era with a young blood.
Having various heart attacks and many health problem during the time in office, Boris Yeltsin finally said a final good bye when he died on April 23rd 2007 of a heart failure.

Boris Yeltsin was born in 1913 in Sverdlovsk & trained as a building engineer, became a Communist Party member in 1961. He was brought to Moscow by Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and installed as First Secretary of the Moscow City Party Committee in 1985. Critical of both Gorbachev and the party, Yeltsin gained a wide following during the late 1980s, and in June 1991 he was elected President of Russia ion 1991. When reactionaries moved to depose Gorbachev, Yeltsin led the fight to resist the coup and dismantle the party apparatus. He used the crisis to seize the political initiative from Gorbachev. He subsequently directed efforts to replace the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics with the more loosely constituted Commonwealth of Independent States that was established in December 1991. Gorbachev's resignation as Soviet President confirmed Yeltsin as the dominant figure in the former Soviet republics. In January 1992 Yeltsin met with other world leaders at the United Nations (UN) to determine the future of the UN Security Council. He urged arms control and Western investment in Russia.
Later on he received many blows as a political opponent and a from the Russian judicial system as well as the parliament which voted him out and took up Ruslan Khasbulatov as a temporary president until new elections could take place. In spite of his political struggles at home, Yeltsin took several trips abroad as President. In 1992 he addressed a joint session of the United States Congress in Washington, D.C., and declared an end to Soviet-era deception in international relations. In 1993 Yeltsin met with newly elected US President Bill Clinton in Canada to discuss financial and military matters. With his recent death (2007) due to long illness he confirmed in his autobiography that after he left his presidency to Putin, he could now get some rest
