How Do You Cancel An AOL Account?

This is a problem that most AOL users face when they log on to the free service and then ant to get rid of it. For obvious although frustrating reasons, it is not easy to quit the service through the site itself.

Although one can try to cancel the account by logging on to the service itself, it is not advisable and will just turn out to be a pointless exercise. The only chance that one has of quitting the service is to contact AOL through the telephone. Do not be mistaken, it is not any easier to get the account cancelled through telephone, but there is a slightly better chance of it happening. The number to contact AOL by telephone is 800-827-6364.

It is a bit difficult to cancel an AOL account because they do not have an option that says "cancel AOL service". The easiest way to cancel an AOL account is to call the customer service centre of AOL and ask them to cancel it for you as they don't offer you the electronic service to do it.  There are several numbers given on the AOL website.

They may try to dissuade you by offering temporary benefits. You may accept them if you want to but otherwise be firm and say that you have to cancel it. Then they will go through their procedures and finally cancel your account and provide you with a cancellation confirmation number. Hi i  had to cancel an aol account about 6 months ago and had to do exactly as cinnamon says. BUT they kept asking me if i would like a dial up account which i said no to, 5 days ago i received a letter threatening me with bailiffs and court proceedings that if i don't pay them £5.95 for the 57 hours dial up internet usage i have used. Fair enough if i had used it but the reason i stopped aol was because my computer had broken so i could not use it and when i got my new one i went with orange broadband hence the fight with aol still is ongoing!! So good luck and check that it is definitely all closed when you close it.

AOL accounts are notorious in that they constitute an extremely easy procedure for signing up but once you have registered as a member, it is very difficult to cancel your account. The cancellations via phone calls take a long time (almost an hour) and are completely frustrating. However there is one person who managed to cancel an AOL account in a matter of ten minutes. Here's what he did:

Call the number 800 827-6364 and say 'Cancellation'. You will then have to provide the answer for your security question. A live attendant will then come on and ask you why you want to quit the service. Do not be specific, simple say, 'I did not like it'. Then simply say 'No' to all the other questions such as 'Do you want high speed?' just keep repeating these things, don't explain, only repeat, and you should be off in a while.
