What Does Acropolis Mean?

Answer Question

3 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

An acropolis is a citadel or elevated part of an ancient city, especially a Greek city and particularly Athens amongst all those cities. Other cities with Acropolis' include Jerusalem, Rome, Thebes, Argos, Corinth etc.

Most early human settlements were built at an elevation as they offered a natural defensive advantage and this section formed the Acropolis.

But the word "The Acropolis" is most widely used to refer to the Acropolis Hill or Sacred Rock of the city of Athens. Most temples and civic structures were built here.

The Parthenon built between 447 and 438 B.C. to honour the goddess Athena Parthenos. The Erechtheion built in 420 BC was a temple dedicated to Attica, Poseidon-Erechtheus and Athena. The temple of Athena Nike built in 420 BC and the Propylaea built in 437-432 BC as the gateway of the Acropolis are all the monuments located at the Acropolis in Athens.
