Something that helps alot is clearing your mind from all stress, similar to wiping off a chalk board just wipe it all away and leave the past in the past and know that tomorrow is a new day and that while you are sleeping your body is healing and resting itself for the next day, think of your cells nourishing and replenishing themselves while you sleep and how great you will feel in the morning.

Make sure you're comfortable. The room should be dark and quiet with no distractions. A little exercise before bed can help. Milk has something in it that, when warmed, aids sleep. Reading in bed before turning the lights off is also helpful to make one drowsy. I also have trouble getting to sleep, so I know how frustrating it can be. Good luck.

Hi falling a sleep is not for all people, some of them could not sleep at all and should take the drugs too, so before going to bed we should not have the heavy diner then take a bath , shower, or listening to the music ,take a few minutes to read or do some exercise. It help and we will feel sleepy later and into a sleep.

This is one of my favorite subjects. I developed a sleep disorder once entering the armed forces. I have learned a great deal and have been 'through it' as far as tests, clinics, down to the 99cent books at cash registers. It is easier to indicate what doesn't work than what does since everyone is different (example: Coffee doesn't keep some people awake). There isn't enough detail in your question to help you constructively. I looked at some answers and some have great ideas. The only one I balk at is the exercise. Since your brain is trying to turn off to sleep -exercise is counter-productive since it will oxygenize it.....however, that being said, 'real' exercise hours earlier will definitely 'wear you down to the point your body will 'seek' a deeper sleep. Going on the idea your sleep issue is not from anxiety or issues that bother you begin with a 'routine'. Women are better than men at 'preparing' to sleep. You're brain will learn the routine -AND BE CONSISTENT. DON'T Stay up past midnight on weekends and expect the same results for your work week. Start slowing down early. If you want to eat make it light. The ingredients in milk are also in plain peanut butter...have a swath (is that a word?), it's a natural tranquilzer. Reading is good-but don't read Psycho. Read what 'won't stimulate your brain. Bore yourself with something enjoyable. Keep with dim lighting or use a small flashlight-Light is a stimulator. If you are dealing with anxiety I will add this....listen to something distracting, a fan, a sleep machine (noises of surf etc), a television or radio (only loud enough to pick up a word or two here and there. Once distracted enough you will fall asleep. I don't know what my preferences are but if you need more help you can e-mail me. Sleeplessness is 'in my opinion' as much,by definition, real pain just like a headache or other items described as pain. Hope this rambling helps you. Dave

Hi sniggerpuf!
I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble getting to sleep. I've read the replies above and some of the answers are great. I guess we all have this problem from time to time, but it's never easy to go through.
I do not know if you have children, but when they were babies we had a routine – we fed them, played for a while, bathed them, cuddled with them for a while and then put them to bed. I can tell you that our daughter slept through the night every night, and even now as an adult she still maintains that same basic routine.
I haven't had that problem in a long time, but what usually works for me is having a warm cup of decaffeinated tea, taking a warm, relaxing bath (or shower if you're not the bath kind), sitting in a dim room with my Boston terrier on my lap and turning off the phone. What I do every night when I get into bed is put a rich lotion on and clear my mind of everything (or try to anyway), making it a fresh canvas. My prayers are said with the addition of "Tonight as I sleep all I will see is the black silk of the inside of my eyelids" (I sometimes tend to have very vivid, unwanted dreams). Then I surrender all my worries to the Lord. This is what seems to work for me.
Others I know will have a light meal in the late afternoon, not eating after 5 PM, not exercising past 3 in the afternoon, not drinking coffee after 12 noon and leaving their worries behind ... All the time by avoiding stress as much as possible.
I think that once you figure out what will or will not work for you and set up and get into your own routine (and stick to it) I think you'll have a much easier time of falling asleep. Good luck and I'll pray for you.

I like reading before I go to sleep. It relaxes me. I'm lucky to read one page before my eyes are shutting. Warm milk is also a good natural method to get sleepy. Those gadgets you can buy that play a variety of sounds (ocean waves, crickets, windchimes, etc.) are pretty good to put one to sleep also.

As a rule of thumb do not drink caffenated beverages at least 2 hours before you go to bed, the sugar and caffeine content doesn't allow your body to properly shut down for sleep. That could be why you wake up feeling crabby and feel as though you didn't get enough sleep.

I have major sleeping problems! I have found a tea that helps. The brand is Celestial. It has a bear on the front. It's sleepytime and then they have sleepytime extra. The extra one is a wellness tea so if you're sick it really helps. It's a chamomile tea and it tastes really good and it makes you drowsy so you should go right to sleep. Don't worry its all natural not some type of drug. So good luck and sweet dreams!

I used to be an insomniac for the longest time, but here are some things that broke my insomnia. I started taking yoga, and amazingly that helped most of my problems. Yoga teaches you to pay attention to your body. Start yoga if you can. I play with pillows, putting them under my knees or between my knees to balance my body. This really helps a ton. I don't eat for hours before I go to bed. Also, have a routine. Try to go to bed at the same time every night and getting up at the same time every morning (or at least as close as you can to the same time). Then your bioclock will know when it's time for bed and time to wake.
