I Have Latex Paint Over Enamel On Kitchen Cupboards.... Can You Help?

The cupboards are 107 years old and have many layers of enamel paint and one coat of latex on top....it is starting to chip. I want to repaint the cupboards using enamel...how do I prepare the surface without having to remove the many layers of paint??

    It is a long process, but paint thinner is what you should use. Try not to sand it can devalue the aged wood.

      Sorry, but that is not right. The only right way to do this is by stripping the latex off. There are some strippers that are not that strong that may remove only the latex.the only problem with doing this kind of thing is asking yourself what your time is worth, because it will take a lot of work, and you may want to just invest in new cabinets.Home owners sometimes don't realize what they are getting into with this kind of thing, and once you start there is no turning back.
      What ever you use to remove paint remember this is very strong stuff, please read the label

        I disagree with the other answers....I have been a painting contractor for 20 years and it is not necessary to remove the old paint....simply scrape and sand and spackle any bad areas....(peeling cracking protruding paint) .and then re-prime caulk and repaint. Rather than remove the old paint simply prepare its surface so as to provide a uniform end result.
