What Should I Be Looking For On Cat Food Labels To Ensure That My Male Cat Does Not Have Another FLUTD Issue?
I have a six-year old male red tabby that recently was treated for FLUTD. He is currently on C/D Hill's Canned Food for FLUTD. My vet office offers differing opinions about healthy/organic pet foods. I would like to switch my male tabby and my female adult cat to a more healthy diet as well. What natural pet foods do you recommend?
Answers
Natural or organic diets vary dramatically in ingredients and formulation. It would be best to actually see a label from a pet food brand to assess its quality. Also these foods do not go through trials and are not regulated. There is no guarantee of the quality of these foods.
I recommend one of the veterinary diets that are formulated for cats with FLUTD. If you are not happy with Science Diet ask your veterinarian for other diet options. If I had a FLUTD cat I would not take a risk on a natural diet; this is a disease with a high rate of re-occurrence.

Dayna, good job! I love to see another cat mom who is so active and concerned with her kittys health! You definitely need a canned food and low ash is good, too. Fishy foods are also high in magnesium. Not good. Ask your vet what else you could feed, and what the healthiest canned food for FLUTD would be, aside from the prescription stuff. Some brands have "special diet" options, that are formulated for urinary health.

Ann,
I was speaking specifically of Wellness brand canned foods. I heard that seafood based canned foods have a higher ash content so I focused specifically on chicken, turkey and beef flavors. Here are the links for the nutritionals. (I also like that there are no by-products)
