How Do You Care For A Rat?

Caring for your rat is relatively simple. Rats are not fussy and therefore make ideal pets for those who cannot spare much time for their upkeep.

Firstly ensure that your pet has a comfortable cage. A spacious wire cage is ideal, especially if it has horizontal bars for the rat to scale. The cage should also preferably be tall.

Your pet rat will relish fresh tasty treats. You can feed it rice, veggies, grains, whole meal bread as well as animal protein. Store bought puppy food is ideal for growing rats.

Next see to it that your rat has comfy bedding. Avoid pine wood or cedar shavings but rather use aspen shavings for the same. However there are several beddings available that are safe for pet rats. You can also ensure your rat has some nesting material like paper or tissues to shred if they get lonely or bored.

If you have both male and female rats in the same cage then you should also put a cardboard box in the cage for nesting purposes. You can also entertain your rats with some ropes, hammocks, platforms and tunnels.
