What Should I Do If I Breakdown On The Motorway?

Answer Question

If you have some indication of a problem developing with your vehicle, leave the motorway at the next exit if at all possible. Otherwise, drive onto the hard shoulder, stopping as far over to the left as possible and switch on your hazard warning lights immediately.

Police emergency telephones line the motorway hard shoulder at half mile intervals, so try to stop close to one of these boxes. The presence of the nearest police emergency telephone is indicated by an arrow on a marker post situated at regular intervals  along the edge of the hard shoulder.

Do not wait in the vehicle as there is a risk of it being struck by oncoming traffic. Get everyone to leave by the doors nearest the verge, never by the doors opening onto the motorway. Leave any animals in your vehicle, and move away as far as is practical from the hard shoulder.

If calling for help with a mobile phone, first take a note of code number on the nearest marker post as this will identify your location. Wait at a safe distance from your vehicle for help to arrive.
