How High Is Mount Everest?

It is the tallest mtn. In the world at just over 29.000 ft.

Mount Everest is considered as the tallest mountain on earth above sea level. It is located in the Himalaya range on the border of Sagarmatha Zone, Nepal and Tibet. The length of Mount Everest is approximately 8,848 meters or 29,029 feet above sea level which makes it the tallest mountain on Earth.

Everest has been the attraction for climbers from all around the world. There have been a number of attempts to get to the top, however, only a few of them have been successful. It has claimed 210 lives in all. The first ones to reach the top of Everest were Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay on 29 May, 1953.

For a long time it was thought to be 29,028 feet above mean sea level (or 8848 m, or a bit over 5 miles).

In 1998 and 1999 this figure was questioned.  Better quality surveys (using GPS) have since revised the height upwards slightly.  It's now officially recorded as 29,035 feet plus or minus 2 metres/about 6 feet (or, a bit over 5 miles).

Using modern measurement methods Mount Everest (straddling the border between Nepal and Tibet) is now credited as being the world's tallest mountain above sea level.  For a while it was thought that K-2 (in neighbouring Pakistan) might be taller, but at the moment K-2 is reckoned to rise a mere 8611 metres.  

The tallest mountain from base to peak is considered to be Mauna Kea, in Hawaii, which measures 33,480 feet (10.3 km) from the sea floor to its top (only 4205 m above sea level).
