How Do Dimples Form?

Answer Question

3 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Dimples are indentations of the skin. These visible indentations are caused by the underlying flesh. They are mostly seen on both the cheeks of most people who have them, but it is quite common for some people to have dimples on just one of their cheeks. A dimple on the chin cause people to have a cleft chin. A majority of men have cleft chins, though it is not common in women to have a cleft chin. Actors Kirk Douglas, Michael Douglas and the late Cary Grant are some celebrities who have or had cleft chins.

Dimples are genetically inherited. They are a dominant trait. They usually occur because some muscles in certain areas of the face of a person are shorter than those in others. Dimples are commonly associated with the youth and babies, though the dimples of babies become less prominent or less noticeable when they grow older as the muscles get longer.

I think dimples are caused by variations in the structure of the facial muscle known as zygomaticus major.i don`t know whether it has relation with heredity..coz i`ve dimple on my left cheek but no one other in my family `ve dimples....!!!!
