Is The Isle Of Wight A County?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

An island of 147 square miles off the south coast of England, the Isle of Wight is the smallest county in England.  It was also the last area of the British Isles to convert to Christianity in 686AD.

It has just one Member of Parliament serving the population of around 135,000 and has no District Councils but only a County Council. The numbers on this island county swell greatly over the summer months and tourism is now the number one industry.

Around two thirds of the land area is farmland and salad crops are popular because of the longer growing season with the mild climate.  An annual regatta is held at Cowes the first week in August with hundreds of boats taking part.

Hosting the famous Isle of Wight Festival every year with many famous musicians and holding a place in the Guinness Book of Records for an attendance by 600,000 (over 4 times the islands population).
