What Is A Curry Leaf?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A curry leaf essentially comes from a curry leaf tree, which is a small tropical to sub-tropical tree belonging to the family Rutaceae. It is essentially native to India. The leaves, you will find, are pinnate, with roughly 11 to 21 leaflets. Also, each leaflet is about 2 to 4 cm in length and 1 to 2 cm in breadth. They are not only small but also narrow and fairly look like the leaves observed in a Neem tree. Kari Patta is the Hindi term for it.

You will find that most Indian cuisine needs the lovely subtle flavouring of this decidedly aromatic leafy spice. These leaves are widely made use of as seasoning, a lot like bay leaves are. They are particularly used in curries containing fish or coconut milk.

While the fresh variety, has a rather short shelf life (they may be kept stored in a freezer for say, up to a week); you can also get them dried. However, the aroma in the latter case is plainly much lesser.
