As the name implies, geophysics involves the application of physical theories and measurements to discover the properties of the earth. Geophysics involves the study of those parts of the earth hidden from the direct view by measuring their physical properties with appropriate instruments. It also includes interpretation of measurement to obtain useful information on the structure and composition of different zones.
In a Broadway geophysics provides the tools for studying the structure and composition of the earth interior. The existence and properties of the earth crust's mantle and core have been determined by observation upon seismic waves from earthquake as well as the measurement of the earth gravitation, magnetic and thermal properties. The tools for such studies have been used in exploration for hydrocarbons and minerals. Plate tectonics, the study of the interior structure of the earth, and such related areas as global and regional processes are known collectively as solid earth geophysics. Geophysics has increased dramatically man's ability to exploit natural resources.
