What Are The Most Diverse Regions Of Eastern Europe, In Terms Of Religious Affiliation?
1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating
Eastern Europe's most diverse regions, in terms of religious affiliation include Transylvania, Vojvodina and Bosnia.
Transylvania is located in western Romania and is home to nearly 2 million Hungarians and thousands of ethnic Germans, in addition to Romanians. Historically, Transylvania was a province of Hungary, before being awarded to Romania in 1920, at the Treaty of Trianon. Transylvania's Romanian majority belongs to the Orthodox Church, but the area's Hungarians bring a great deal of religious diversity to the region. Most of the Hungarians around the cities of Cluj-Napoca, Satu Mare and Oradea are Calvinists. The Hungarians of Harghita and Kovaszna counties, however, are a mix of Roman Catholics, Calvinists and Unitarians. The Germans in this area tend to be Lutherans.
The Serb province of Vojvodina is also a multi-ethnic and diverse area of Eastern Europe. Located in northern Serbia, Vojvodina is home to Serbs, Hungarians, Romanians and even some Slovaks. While the Serbs tend to be of the Orthodox faith, most Hungarians are Catholic, especially near Subotica, while those near Novi Sad tend to be Calvinists. There are also many Lutherans and some Unitarians in this province.
Bosnia and Herzegovina has also always been a very diverse land, leading to much ethnic and religious conflict in the 1990s. Much of northern and eastern Bosnia, especially around Banja Luka and Brcko, have Orthodox majorities, while Muslims are dominant in the central parts of the country, especially around Sarajevo, Zenica and Tuzla. In the areas near the Croatian border, the population tends to be Roman Catholic.
