Any device which incorporates a laser whether for pointing, measuring or calibrating is potentially dangerous and quite definitely not a toy.
When you first obtain a laser pen, pointing device or level, always read the manufacturer's instructions carefully before use. No-one likes reading instructions or manuals, but always do so with any laser-emitting device to avoid injuring yourself or others.
Remember the laser beam emitted, albeit weak in comparison with full-scale industrial lasers, can still cause irreparable damage to the eyes if shone directly into someone's face for a sustained period. Around 90 seconds or less can be sufficient to cause permanent damage to the retina. Even a short glance directly at a laser source can cause temporary flash blindness similar to that invoked by welding or flash photography.
The following, in conjunction with the manufacturer's recommendations, should help avoid accidents:
• Never shine a laser through binoculars or a telescope
• Always switch the device off as soon as you are finished
• Think carefully about where you are using a laser device and avoid shining the laser near glass or mirrored surfaces
• Do not use your laser device for any purpose not intended by the makers.
