Devon, one of the largest counties in England and is much bigger than its neighbour Cornwall. Back in the early 19th century more than two thirds of the population of Devon lived in small hamlets and villages

It was not until 1844 that a mainline railway was established from Bristol to Exeter and then on to Plymouth by 1849. This opened up this otherwise rural county.

At the 2001 census Devon had a population of just over 700,000 and like Cornwall had lost many of its traditional industries like farming, mining and fishing. Dependent on a high level of tourism and famous for its Devon Cream Teas it is a very attractive county and has many areas of outstanding natural beauty.

The Dartmoor National Park lies at its centre and brings in a large amount of tourists and walkers. Devon is also now famous for being the only county in England to have grown olives due to recent climate changes.
