A firewall is used for protecting a computer against threats. Firewalls are either hardware firewalls, which are placed in between a cable and a modem, or they can be software firewalls, which are included in anti-virus packages and operating systems.
Usually, when firewalls are provided with anti-virus software or by operating systems, they will automatically be switched on. The user can choose to switch off the firewall if they wish, though this isn't a good idea as the computer will have less protection.
