Answers
In 1909,there was a danger to British Naval ports from German Intelligence Service. Hence this Security Service Bureau was established in the United Kingdom. During World War I, this Bureau became part of a new Directorate of Military Intelligence and hence it was given the name MI5.The responsibilities of MI5 were increased and hence it had approximately 850 staff.
The main function of MI5 is to protect the United Kingdom from terrorism and to fight against serious crime. It is totally related with the internal security. MI5 was the Service's official name only for thirteen years.
The Security Service was founded as the 'Home section of the Secret Service Bureau'. Then it became 'Directorate of Military Operations, section 5 (MO5), then it became 'Military Intelligence section 5'(MI5),
Then it became 'Defence Security Service' and then it became 'Security Service'.
