Do Welsh Surnames Reflect Place-names?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

This category of Welsh surnames is relatively uncommon but fairly plentiful.
A number of surnames from all over Britain and Ireland do reflect placenames.
Many locational surnames can be misleading for family historians. For example a Welsh man moving to England for work may have had the name of the place of settlement attached to his patronomic name.

The Anglo- Norman invasion of Ireland was launched from Pembroke and took many Welsh locational surnames across to  Ireland, these in turn became part of the body of Irish surnames, examples being Prendergast from Pembroke and  Cogan from Glamorganshire.
A surname found in southern Bedfordshire but  originating from Gwynedd is Whinnett.
Other examples of place and locational names are Mostyn ( Flintshire), Conwy (Gwynedd). Others are Dolben, Gwnnys, Kyffin, Coytmor.
Some Welsh people may have adopted English names from heavily Anglicised areas of Wales such as south Wales. Examples of these are Sutton, Roch and Picton.
