Heartworms come from the mosquito. Heartworm, or Dirofilaria immitis, is a potentially dangerous parasitic worm spread by mosquitoes. Dogs are the most common hosts for heartworm, although it is also found in cats and other animals. Feeding a dog on the ground is a terrible thing to do, as your pet can become infected with a multiple list of worms, and or parasites. Your dog should be on a monthly preventitive medicine obtained through your vet for these parasites, such as Heartguard Plus, or Interceptor. Always feed and water your pet indoors, in stainless steel bowls. Feeding indoors keeps away insects and rats/mice, as they like your dogs food too. Water outside must be kept in the shade and the bowl must be cleaned and rinsed and fresh water given EVERY DAY. Stainless steel bowls cleaned daily do not allow the bacteria that "plastic" or other bowls  can have, even after washing. Also, many dogs get  "chin pimples" that often times get infected from eating/drinking out of plastic or other than stainless steel bowls.  ALSO: Feeding your dog properly, NOT from off the ground,  also forms a bond with your dog and teaches it manners!
    Good luck with your pet!

Thank you very much for your answer. I have told my husbands brother not to feed our dog on the ground and all he says is it won't hurt. I study on animals a lot and i already knew that it could be harmful. But know i have proof to show him.
