Where Did Coffee Cultivation In India First Begin?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

It seems certain that coffee was first introduced to India in the 17th century, by way of the Middle East where it had been known since the 15th. There is a persistent legend that seven coffee beans were smuggled back into India by an Indian (Sufi) Muslim, a respected holy man called Baba Budan, around 1650. He is said to have taken them back to his native region of Karnataka, which is still a well known coffee-producing area. Details of this can be found at indiancommodity.com

In any case, coffee cultivation certainly develped rapidly in India in the 18th and 19th century, largely controlled by the British-ownd East India Company. Today production is regulated by the Indian Coffee Board, and India is one of the world's top 10 coffee-growing nations. Mysore and Monsooned Malabar are the best known varieties.
