If your son got his puzzle from a newspaper or magazine, there could even be a Sudoku helpline, where you can find clues if you get stuck. If not, another solution might be to go to a beginners website and use the tutorial, tips etc until he has got the idea of how it works. With sudoku it's important not to give up, because it really does get better after a while!.
