Leukemia is a disease in which the white cells of blood are not properly formed and start to increase in numbers in a malignant way.  They crowd out the bone marrow and interfere with the formation of the red cells and platelets.  This leads to anemia and hemorrhages.  Leukemia can be classified according to the type of white cells involved.

Myeloid leukemia is a disease of the polymorphs.  Lymphatic leukemia affects the lymphocytes.  Monocytic leukemia, involves the monocytes, and is the least common.  The type of leukemia is identified by examining the blood and the marrow obtained from a bone marrow aspirate.

Leukemia is a malignant disease of the bone marrow of unknown cause, which leads to a great increase in the number of cells (but these cells are abnormal).  Leucocytosis is an increase in the number of white cells as the result usually of infection of organisms such as bacteria.  It is the natural response of the body to overcome the infection.  Leukemia can be acute or chronic.

Acute from being commonest in children but can occur at any age.  The onset is usually sudden with fever, pallor and purpura.  There may be bleeding from the nose or from the mouth and general symptoms of severe anemia with fatigues and loss of strength.
