How Does A Gum Shield Work?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A gum shield is a piece of equipment that protects the athlete's teeth and gum. A gum shield is made up of substances which mould and take the shape of your gum in order to make a shield around them. This helps in protecting the athletes, rugby players and boxers from damaging their jaw area or breaking their teeth or gum while playing. A gum shield is kept in warm water before it is put in the mouth of the athlete. This helps the material to loosen up.

As the shield is put in the athlete's mouth, the athlete sucks on it for about 3 minutes and the shield takes the shape of your jaw and teeth. This type of gum shield is called the "boil in bag" gum shield. You can get a gum shield custom designed by giving your teeth impression.
