King Francis 1st of France lived from 1494-1547 and was king of France from 1515-1547. he was somewhat of a beligerent king, waging war against Italy and also four wars over supremacy in Europe. Despite this his reputation is a good one and he is often called 'The Father and Restorer of Letters'.
He succeeded King Louis XIL who was paradoxically his cousin and his father in law.
However, despite the wars, he also reigned over a period which was steeped in culture. He organised the building of the royal residence at Fontainebleu as well as the College de France. He even had Leonardo de Vinci working at his court.
He did strive for some peace, organising, in 1516, an agreement with the pope and the vatican as well as brokering an alliance or concordat with the Swiss. He was succeeded by King Henry II in 1547 who was his son.

Francis I (also called Francis of Angoul me) lived from the twelfth of September 1494 to the thirty-first of March 31 1547. He reigned as King of France from 1515 until 1547, first ascending the throne at the age of twenty. After his death France was reigned by his son, Henry II. Francis 1 is remembered as the first Renaissance king, cultured, highly educated including a mastery of latin, a great builder and very generous.
He was attentive to the cultural revival in Italy and invited great Italian artists to come to France. He founded the University of France and also a great library. However Francis' reign was distinguished by economic troubles, poor statesmanship and, in the later years, by the severe persecution of Protestants. His efforts at war were also often disastrously unsuccessful. Overall Francis I was very much a king of his times, seeing France through the first years of the Renaissance, but he lacked political and martial skills and his role is often seen through rose-colored glasses rather than appreciating the effects of lost wars and a floundering economy on the population at large.
