The One Child Policy is a policy in China that attempt to take a command and control approach to population control. The policy states that no couple can have more than one child. Although very strictly put into practice, some cases are excluded from this law like rural couples who need more children to help cultivate their land. In some cases, a second child is allowed if the first one is a female or is disabled.
It was introduced by the government of China in 1979 to overcome the many socio-economic as well as environmental problems and constraints it was facing as a result of over population. Its population was becoming a threat to the quality of life in China and was a great economic burden.
This policy has been very controversial as many people believe that having only one child has negative social impacts on children who do not have many playmates to spend their childhood play hours with. Also, having only one child increases the risk of parents spoiling the child by indulging in his every whim because he/she is the only child they have.
Since couples can only have one child and since having a baby boy is considered more honorable and more desirable, the rate of female infanticide is quite high in China as is the number of abortions.
However unfair it may seem, this policy has been a great success as it has reduced the population growth rate and thus increased the quality of life in China.
