What Other Programmes Has Richard Hammond Presented?

Richard Hammond, presenter of the programme Top Gear and who recently suffered a severe brain injury when a dragster car he was driving to break the world landspeed record crashed, also presented a science programme called Brainiac.

This programme made science fun and enacted lots of dramatic experiments, all to demonstrate facts about science in an entertaining way. One programme looked at the evidence that mobile phones can cause petrol stations to explore. A caravan with 25 mobile phones was filled with petrol fumes and then Richard and his colleagues rang all 25 phones at the same time. Nothing happened.

When wires were connected up to the caravan and attached to a nylon coat worn by someone rubbing their feet on carpet, the static electricity charge was channelled into the caravan ~ and it exploded.

Some truth in this, as it turns out ~ many petrol station fires are caused by static discharges that arise when people get in their cars whilst filling up and gain static from the carpet in the car.
