Paul Niehans, one of the most controversial figures of the century, was born on 1882 in Switzerland. He was a genius surgeon specialized in glandular transplantation. Born and brought up in a religious atmosphere, Paul Niehans did not develop himself to follow the religious custom inherited to him. Rather he started studying medicine and joined the Swiss army during 1912. There he initially started gaining his knowledge on human anatomy and related bodily functions.

During 1913, Niehans took interest in cell's adaptive abilities and had been greatly influenced by Alexis Carrel's experimentation on cell's ability. By 1925, Paul Niehans became popular as a leading glandular surgeon in Europe.

The year 1931 had a great significance as Paul Niehans called this is the birth year of cell therapy. He did the treatment of a patient suffering from tetany and the parathyroid had been erroneously eliminated for that patient. The patient was too weak to undergo a glandular transplantation while Niehans injected the patient with the parathyroid gland of an ox and patient recovered very fast. Niehans postulated that the illnesses could be cured up by injecting live cell extracts from healthy animal organs.

He had been nominated to the Vatican Academy of Science after Niehans treated Pope Pious XII.

    He died in 1971.
