With the recent win of the Bahujan Samaj Party in the state elections of India's most populous state Uttar Pradesh, political analysts are observing a significant and meaningful paradigm shift in the mechanics of Indian politics. For over half a century and even before that (the latter refers to the political situation before partition while the former talks about the politcal condition after partition), it were the upper-caste politicians who skimmed the cream from the political pie while the leftover crumbs were left for the minorities particularly the members of the lower caste. Nevertheless the scene of Indian politics have beheld quite a dramatic twist in events. With the BSP, which is a lower-caste party, in power, the upper-caste members of the legislature are left to play secondary roles. It was quite interesting to see the Congress, which is the head of the national coalition, barely managing to get a fourth position while the Hindu Nationalist Bhartiya Janta Party achieved the third spot, a situation that clearly signifies the degree of popularity that these parties hold in the most populous province of the country.
