How Can A 12 Year Old Invest In The Stock Market?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

In the United Kingdom, it's illegal for a 12 year old to actually invest in the stock market. This is because no one below 18 would be permitted to hold any company shares or the like in their own name. However, simply request your parents instead to do so for you. Parents or even grandparents can, on your behalf, open various investments in their name; yet designate the investment to you. This investment is among the simplest ones (termed a 'bare trust'). By designating, you then become the true legal owner of said investment once you turn eighteen. There are many other forms of trusts, but these are more complicated.

More formal sorts of trusts are available. Your parent could in particular stipulate, for instance, that you get the income accruing from the investment trust only until you turn 25; however, your parent's solicitor needs to be involved since this can be complex.
