Which Route Across London Does The District Line On The Underground System Follow?
Answers
The District Line of the London Underground system begins in Upminster in East London. It travels through the East End, the City and down to Kensington before splitting into five branches with different terminals. The terminals are Edgware Road, Kensington (Olympia), Wimbledon, Richmond and Ealing Broadway.
The line first opened in 1868 but initially operated between South Kensington and Westminster. This has been extended many times over the years and now involves 40 miles of track serving 60 stations. In the central part of London it shares a good portion of track with the Circle Line, and in the East-end with the Hammersmith & City Line.
Due to the vast area that the District line cover, 66 trains are required to service the line during peak hour periods. An extra ten trains are put onto the Edgware Road branch.
On an average weekday, approximately 556,500 people use the District Line, with over 172 million passengers using it annually.
