A car is a wheeled motor vehicle which is used for transportation of passengers. The history of automobiles is very old. Vehicles that can be considered as automobiles were developed as early as the year 1769.

Nicolas Joseph Cugnot is credited with invention of the first car. This car was a self propelled mechanical vehicle in an existing horse drawn vehicle. This happened in the year 1769. After that several other people worked on developing their various automobiles.

An automobile that has its own four stroke gasoline engine was built by Karl Benz in the year 1885. He was also granted a patent of that invention next year. This formed the basis for the modern car.
