Alternatively known as the Welsh Hound or, in Welsh, Bytheuad, the Welsh Hound, the indigenous hunting dog, is a product of the province's mountainous landscape. The typical Welsh Foxhound is a low scenting dog, strong, with good shoulders, and 'talkative', a loud bark being a prequisite of live in the windy Welsh hillsides.

As a breed, the Welsh Foxhound is an ancient race, probably descended from the extinct Celtic Hound and the old Staghound. Hunts kept celebrated packs of pure Welsh Foxhounds for nearly 200 years, often naming their favourites Llangibby, Neuadd-Fawr, Ynysfor and Gelligaer.

Adult usually grow to about 24 inches tall and weigh around 70 to 75 lbs on average, so they are fairly substantial dogs well suited to working in rough and broken country. Their colouring is black and fawn, red, tan and mixed. The coat is rough, medium length, dense and occasionally smooth in some examples of the breed.
