How Can I Train To Be A Psychotherapist?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The road to becoming a recognised psychotherapist is not a short one.  Usually one of the most basic requirements if you want to be a psychotherapist is that you should have been through therapy yourself.  This will mean that you have actually experienced the process personally and you will have resolved any issues which you may have had on a personal level.  Some people may be in therapy for anything up to 10 years !
If the thought of going through therapy deters you, then this is probably not the right career choice for you.
Once you have been through therapy, then you can undertake various courses, which are affiliated to the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.  The training can take up to three years.
Even after qualifying and practising, psychotherapists are expected to have some kind of therapy to help them remain focussed and in control of their personal issues and emotions.
