What Is Constitution?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

A constitution can be defined as a codified system of rules and principles, often expressed in a written document, which regulates and protects the people or members in a country or organisation. The constitution defines the basic principles and also codifies the duties and responsibilities of a government. A constitution also guarantees the basic rights of its people.

Constitutions are classified according to various features they embody or for the lack of it. A main classification is whether a constitution is codified or not codified. The constitution of the United States is a codified one whereas the constitution of the United Kingdom is not codified.

Another feature of the constitution is entrenchment or lack of it. Entrenchment refers to the degree of protection a constitution has from being modified without following a strict predefined procedure.

Constitution also features distribution of sovereignty, separation of powers, and lines of accountability. It defines where the sovereignty of the nation lies, how the powers of the constitutional bodies are distributed and how authorities can be made accountable.
