Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A penniless soldier climbs inside a hollow tree to fetch a tinder-box for a witch. Inside he finds three chambers, each containing a money-chest and a huge dog.(The largest has "eyes as big as the Round Tower in Copenhagen" Using enchantments from the witch, he gets past the dogs and steals their treasure, including the tinder-box. When the witch asks him for the box, he cuts off her head, takes it and the money, and starts to live a life of extravagance. Soon the money is spent; lacking even a candle, he strikes the tinder-box to make a flame, and one of the giant dogs appears, saying, "What do you please to command?"
Served by the dogs, the soldier lives in comfort until, being curious to see the king's daughter, he has her brought secretly to his house. Her parents eventually find out, he is arrested and sentenced to death. On the gallows, he begs for a last smoke, takes out his tinder-box and is rescued by all three dogs. He subsequently marries the princess.
