Who Is The President Of Australia?

Answer Question

29 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

The next general election for the Parliament of Australia is expected to take place in late 2007, although it can be held as late as 19 January 2008.

The opposition Australian Labour Party, currently led by Kevin Rudd, will be the main challenger to the incumbent Coalition government, currently led by the Prime Minister and Leader of the Liberal Party, John Howard, and his Coalition partner the Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the National Party, Mark Vaile.

Australia basically does not have a President within the ambit of its political system. As of now, Australia is a commonwealth of the U.K, and is officially called the Commonwealth of Australia. The Commonwealth of Australia, while adopting the parliamentary system of governance, is different from most other countries in that it is a constitutional monarchy, like the U.K.

The monarch of the U.K., i.e., currently Queen Elizabeth II, is also considered the nominal head of Australia, though, as in U.K, the queen does not hold any official powers and her role is merely titular. At the national level, the representative of the U.K. monarch is the governor-general, while the representative of the monarch in each state of Australia is the governor. While the governor-general has executive powers, the person on whose advice these powers are executed is the Prime Minister.

So from this, it is clear that there is no President of Australia. The closest figurative head holding a position akin to that of the President is the monarch of U.K. whose representative in Australia is the governor-general.

Australia has a Prime Minister, rather than a president. The current Prime Minister is John Howard, of the Liberal Party. Howard has been in office since 1996, after defeating Paul Keating and his Labour government. Since 1996, Howard has won three elections, in 1998, 2001 and 2004. Despite lots of speculation, it remains unclear as to when Howard will retire from politics.

In addition to the position of prime minister, Australia also has a Governor General, like other British Commonwealth countries. The Governor General is a purely symbolic role and the person filling this office represents Queen Elizabeth II and the British Monarchy in Australia. Major-General Philip Michael Jeffery (b. 1937) is Australia's current Governor General and he assumed office in 2003.

Australia's Head of State is, officially, Queen Elizabeth II. There are some, however, who support republicanism. If Australia were to ever transform into a republic, it would likely replace the Governor General with a President.

Australia (as mentioned above) does not have a president but a prime minister. In the recent election Australia had, John Howard of the Liberal Party got voted out and Kevin Rudd of the Labour Party got voted in. So Kevin Rudd is our new prime minister.

Australia is a common wealth republic and has a parliamentary system in place. It has a prime minister and a governor general not a president. The ruler or monarch in the United Kingdom is also considered as the figurative head in Australia but has no powers in the government and has the title of governor general. Currently, Queen Elizabeth II is this symbolic head. The prime minister is elected through an election process.

When Australia becomes a republic, the governor general will be replaced by a president called That Bad Pong who is the son of a Vietnamese refugee, just to show that Australia has become an Asian nation.

Australia is NOT a "commonwealth of the UK". There is no such thing. Australia is an independent nation, a constitutional monarchy. The Head of State is Queen Elizabeth II and the head of government is the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd. Queen Elizabeth is Head of State of 16 countries, including Australia, Canada, UK and 13 others.
