How Did Watermelons Get Their Name?

I was just wandering how they got their name???

    Watermelons consists of Water & Melon. Here Melon is a term used for various members of the Cucurbitaceae family with fleshy fruits, or may specify the typically sweet-fruiting members, muskmelon. That how Watermelon get its name.

    At first is was cultivated in Africa as it was main source of diet water, raw materials for jams & pickle etc. Then its cultivation technique was adopted in china. since then it become largest producer of watermelon.

      This name has its roots from Africa,Melon is used for a family of Cucurbitaceae, the fruits with fleshy fruits. Melon can be reffered for some fruits, so watermelon name was derived from the Melon family of fruits.

        Because they contain mostly water..it's funny, I just read an article about this.

        It got it's name from being more than 90% water.
