Although nothing really beats the fun of browsing through old books in a real bookshop, sometimes it's more productive to use the internet.
Amazon has a section called Market Place and this is where usually second hand books are sold at lower costs.
Alibris is an amazing website for second hand books, especially signed or first editions, the costs are also amazing, I saved over thirty pounds on buying four books from Alibris over Amazon! They also include FREE delivery on their orders, even if the books are coming from across the ocean!
AbeBooks are another website that has a wide range, you can also load your own books for sale onto their site. (although why anyone would sell their own books...)
To try to find out of print books, which are often difficult to track - sometimes even new books go out of print quickly, try usedbooksearch.co.uk.

All the sites mentioned above are great places to look for used and secondhand books. I personally start from
www.bookfinder4u.com
It goes through a massive list of online boostores, and takes the fuss out of looking through different websites that might give you the same information.
