    The Beach is a novel written by Alex Garland in the year 1996, it is based on backpackers in Thailand. It has been influenced by the fictional instances of Heart of Darkness or Lord of the Flies. It portrays the escapades of a youthful Englishman who is in hunt of a legendary, paradisiac beach which has been unscathed by tourism.

    Alex Garland born in the year 1970 is a well known British novelist. He is the son of famous political cartoonist Nick Garland. Alex studied in the University College School, Hampstead, and later on went to the University of Manchester to study art history.

    His first ever novel, The Beach was printed and released in the year 1996, it was based on his experiences as a backpacker. The novel developed into a cult classic.
