Why Will Not My Dog Go Down Stairs?

Answer Question

4 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Some dogs feel insecure and your dog may have a fear of falling.  Best way, is to help him along.  There are training methods.  As well, if you have a small dog, the fear of falling is greater.  Some farm animals can't go down stairs, such as cows, but can walk down a hill.  Many animals can climb, but because of them having 4 legs, may not have mastered how to use each individually to do the task.  Keep encouraging him and help him along.  Good luck

My dog was the same way. I know it sounds mean but it broke him of his fear. We would pick him up and place him on the forth or fifth stair from the bottom then sat above him so he had no choice but to stand there or go down. We did not force him to move he eventually got bored and wanted to go play and will a couple of min of him slowly working his way down the few stairs he made it. Do this a few times adding a couple stairs at a time and he will get it. Be sure to praise him a lot for this this is a huge step. Be sure to give him a break in between tries to it may make him really nervous you don't want it to hurt his belly.
