Montreux is a beautiful resort town in the Canton of Vaud, Switzerland on the banks of Lake Geneva. Montreux is situated on the north shore of Lake Geneva where the roads to the Roman capital of Aventicum and the road into Gaul through Besançon get separated. It has a total population of 22,897.
The city boasts a very gorgeous walk all along the lakeside, stretching from Villeneuve towards Vevey. The Chateau of Chillon provides a marvelous sight of the complete Lake of Geneva and is easily accessible via bus, foot or boat.
Montreux is famous for its Christmas Market that takes place for four continuous weeks during the Christmas season.
Wine is a popular cultivation in the slopes of the lake extending from Lavaux to Montreux. Place du Marché is the prime square of the town featuring a statue of Freddie Mercury of the group Queen facing Lake Geneva. A few small villages like La Tour-de-Peilz, Clarens, Territet, and Villeneuve surround Montreux.
