What Is The Most Expensive Painting In The World?

The list of the most expensive paintings of all time is dominated by Picasso and Van Gogh, with four and three entries respectively. However, the most expensive painting ever sold is the 'Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer 1' by Gustav Klimt. This fetched $135 million in a private sale in June 2006. It was sold to Ronal Lauder for inclusion in his Neue Gallery, where it has been on display since.

The painting is just less than 1.5m�, and took three years to complete. The subject was the wife of a wealthy Austrian industrialist, who commissioned two such portraits. The piece is characteristic of Klimt's work, with a seemingly elongated figure surrounded by ornate gold-leaf and geometric patterns.

Before her death, Adele Bloch-Bauer had indicated that she wished for the painting to be donated to the Austrian State Gallery. However the Nazi invasion of Austria led to the seizure of the painting which, following a lengthy legal battle after the end of the war, were entrusted to Maria Altmann, who exhibited them in Los Angeles until its sale in 2006.
