I can go one more...cats have nightmares too. There were several times during his life when I woke my cat Simon out of nightmares that were causing obvious distress to him. He was five months when I got him, so I did not know what his kittenhood contained that created the disturbance, but he used to live in an ivy landscape among his litter mates, outside. The nightmares tended to be about running away from something.

Yes,,, my dog Rocky was a stray we rescued.  He was so thin we didn't think he'd make it through the night as it was the dead of winter and snowing.  Happily, he did recover.
However, whenever he ate he made all kinds of growling noises, like he was fighting off a pack of dogs and defending his food.
He would also do this at night in his sleep,,he'd cry, wimper and growl.  This lasted for over a year, but now, after two years he can drink and eat out of the same bowl as our other Rotty.
We do wake him up from a nightmare,,carefully and gently as we don't want him to remember the "ol days!!
