It depends what kind of athletics you talk about if you talk about the athletics with running high jump etc. The kinda stuff that is in the olympics teams are used:
1. For relay races
2. Medal standings (all round country/ international teams)
3. Individual event medal standings (e.g britain have won 3 gold medals in 100m mens and 2 in women's pole vault)
